leg&go Balance Bike 3in1, Adjustable Wooden Toddler Bike $429.00

Most first bikes are outgrown in a season. This one is a frame with three setups in the box, changed in about a minute with no tools, so the bike a one year old sits and pushes on is the same bike a four year old glides on.

It weighs 3.3 kg. That is the number that decides whether a bike gets ridden to the end of the road or abandoned halfway, because a child who can pick it up themselves keeps going.

What you are getting

Three setups, one minute, no tools Baby, bouncy and standard balance bike. Everything needed is in the box.
3.3 kg, about 7.2 lb Light enough for a small child to lift, right up and turn around unaided.
Real wheels, not mouldings Pneumatic rubber tyres, alloy rims, wire tension spokes. A 14 inch front and 12 inch rear.
Soft steering limiters They restrict how far and how fast the bars can swing, which matters most at speed on rough ground.

Recognition and origin

iF Design Award 2019, Gold Listed on iF's own winner ranking. The judges cited the cantilevered suspension and the natural ergonomics.
Made in the European Union Designed and built by Shaman Inventions Ltd in Latvia, from Baltic birch plywood.

leg&go also list a Eurobike Award 2015 and an ISPO Brandnew finalist place for 2016/17, and state the bike is CE marked and tested to EN 71-3. That information comes from the manufacturer. Ask us and we will request the documents for you.

Rider height 85 to 110 cm
Seat height 25 to 47 cm
Weight 3.3 kg, 7.2 lb
Dimensions and fit

Fit is by height and inside leg, not by age. Stand your child against a wall and measure to the top of the head, then measure floor to crotch. If the seat can go low enough for both feet to sit flat, they are ready.

Rider height 85 to 110 cm, 33.4 to 43.3 in
Seat height 25 to 47 cm, 9.8 to 18.5 in, adjustable
Overall length 95.4 to 99 cm, 37.6 to 39 in, depending on setup
Weight 3.3 kg, 7.2 lb
Front wheel 14 in
Rear wheel 12 in

The front wheel is deliberately larger than the rear. leg&go state this helps the bike ride over tree roots and holes rather than stopping dead at them.

Materials and certification

The frame and front fork are lacquered birch plywood. leg&go use Baltic birch, the same moulded plywood used in design furniture and, historically, in aviation. The flex in that plywood is what gives the frame its natural suspension.

leg&go state the bike is CE marked and has been tested to EN 71-3. EN 71-3 covers the migration of certain elements out of toy materials. It is a materials test rather than a blanket safety certificate, and we would rather say that plainly than let a mark imply more than it covers.

They also state a 5 year warranty on the bike.

Certification information is supplied by the manufacturer. Email us and we will request the documents on your behalf.

Assembly and care

Assembly is required and the manual is in the box. Changing between the three setups afterwards takes about a minute and needs no tools, which is the point of the design.

The tyres are pneumatic, so check the pressure now and then exactly as you would on your own bike. Wipe the plywood with a damp cloth and dry it. Do not store it outdoors, because prolonged damp is the one thing a lacquered plywood frame will not forgive.

Check the fixings every few months and after any hard use, and retighten anything that has worked loose. Follow the manufacturer's manual for setup, seat height and any age guidance.

Shipping and returns

Free shipping across Canada and the contiguous USA. Orders leave us in 1 to 5 business days.

No customs duty to either country.

30 days to return it from the day it arrives. Return shipping is paid by you unless the fault is ours, and there is no restocking fee.

Tell us your child's height and inside leg and we will tell you honestly whether to buy now or wait a few months. hello@truelittlenorth.com

SEE IT MOVE

Watch it change shape

One frame, reconfigured as they grow. Quicker to watch than to read about.

HOW IT GROWS

The frame stays. Everything else moves.

The seat and handlebars raise as they do, and the attachments change what the bike is for. You are not buying a stage, you are buying the frame all the stages hang off.

01

Sitting and pushing

Seat at its lowest, feet flat on the ground, nothing in the way.

02

Balancing

Seat raised, feet up, gliding. This is where the real skill is learned.

03

Pedalling

Add the pedal attachment. No training wheels, because the balance is already there.

04

Tricycle or downhill

Extra stability with a rear cargo box, or a footrest brake for hills.

Seat and handlebar heights are listed on the product page. Follow the manufacturer's manual for sizing and setup.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Four things you will notice

7.2 lb, and that mattersA child who can pick the bike up will ride it further from the house. Most wooden balance bikes are heavier, and metal ones heavier still.
The frame is the suspensionBaltic birch plywood flexes. iF Design's judges singled out the cantilevered suspension when they awarded it Gold in 2019.
Belt drive, not chainOn the pedal and tricycle attachments. Nothing to oil, and no chain to catch fingers or trouser legs.
Real bike partsInflatable tires, light rims and metal spokes rather than moulded plastic wheels.

ORIGIN

Designed and built in the European Union

leg&go is made by Shaman Inventions Ltd in Latvia, from Baltic birch plywood. Designed, engineered and manufactured in the same place, not assembled from parts shipped in and rebadged.

"It's crazy how many disposable things are constantly produced in this world. I decided to do it differently, to create a bike that grows together with its rider, so that the parents shouldn't buy a new one after a year."

Egons Garklavs, founder and chief designer

Questions parents ask

Does it come with pedals?

No. The bike ships as a balance bike. Pedals are the separate Pedal Bike Add-on, which is deliberate, because balance comes first and pedals come later.

Will the attachments fit later, or do I have to buy now?

They fit the same frame, so you can add them at any point. Nothing expires and nothing needs to be bought as a set.

What size child does it suit?

Sizing is by height rather than age, and the seat and handlebars adjust. The measurements are on the product page. Send us your child's height and we will tell you honestly whether it is too early.

Is wood strong enough for a bike?

It is Baltic birch plywood, and the flex is the point. iF Design's judges specifically praised the cantilevered suspension when they gave it Gold in 2019. leg&go also report running one 40,075 km on a test rig with only the tires needing replacement.

Chain or belt?

Belt, on both the pedal and tricycle attachments. Nothing to oil, and no chain to catch fingers.

Can it be left outside?

We would not. It is a plywood frame with a protective finish, so rain and prolonged damp are not its friend. Bring it in and it will last.

Where is it made?

In the European Union. Specifically Latvia, by Shaman Inventions Ltd, from Baltic birch plywood.

How does it arrive?

Flat packed with a manual. Assembly is straightforward and the tools you need are included.

Not sure it is the right moment?

Tell us your child's height and whether they are walking confidently. We will tell you honestly whether to buy now or wait six months.
