A play pen is only worth having if it goes where the child already plays. Buy one by its own footprint and you end up with a fence standing on bare floor, or a mat with the frame overhanging the edge of it.

This baby play pen is sized around the play mat instead. The smaller one encloses a single Ggumbi Licoco play mat at 200 x 140cm, the larger encloses two at 200 x 280cm. Panels stand 600mm and clip together without tools. The play mat is sold separately.

Two sizes, both built around the mat Ten panels enclose one Licoco play mat at 200 x 140cm. The larger size encloses two, at 200 x 280cm. Choose by the floor you are giving over to it rather than by the panel count. The mat is not included.

Panels stand 600mm Sixty centimetres, which is chest height on a standing toddler and holds a baby who is pulling up on it.

A fixing band that closes the gap Panels leaned on by a child work loose and open a gap at the join. The fixing band pulls the join tight and keeps it there. It matters more on the larger size, where there is more frame to shift.

PE panels, PP connectors, BPA free Panels are PE, polyethylene, and connectors are PP, polypropylene. Ggumbi states the materials are BPA free and that the raw material is imported from Korea. Each panel is moulded in ivory or grey with stars and clouds pressed into the face, and carries Made in Korea on the panel itself.

Materials and certification

The panels are PE, polyethylene, and the connectors are PP, polypropylene. Both are in common use in children's products for durability and for how they behave in a child's mouth.

Ggumbi Co., Ltd., who manufacture this play pen in Korea, state that the materials are BPA free and that the raw material is imported from Korea.

We do not describe this product as non-toxic. That word covers more than any single test can show, and we would rather name the material and let you judge it than lean on a word that means nothing in particular.

Assembly and care

Panels join with a clip connector, so no tools are needed. Set it up on a flat floor. Fit the fixing band to the connector on the inside first, then close it. Doing it in that order is what stops gaps opening at the joins later. Follow the manufacturer's manual for placement, clearances and any age guidance.

Wipe the panels with a damp cloth and dry them. PE does not absorb spills, so nothing needs to soak. Check the connectors and the fixing band every few months and after the pen has been moved.

Flat floor

Anti slip pads need an even surface. Thick pile rugs let the frame rock.

Clear the edges

Keep climbable furniture away, and check what a standing child can reach over.

Fit the band first

Band to the connector on the inside, then the mat. This is what stops gaps opening.

Before you buy

Questions we get asked

Does the playpen come with the mat?

No. They are sold separately and sized to pair. The playpen is the fence, the Licoco mat is the floor.

Which size do I need?

200 × 140cm takes one Licoco mat, 200 × 280cm takes two. The table above has the footprints in feet.

Will it slide on hardwood?

The connectors carry anti slip pads with a wide contact area. On the larger layout the anti loosening band makes a noticeable difference.

Can a toddler open the door?

The door uses a double lock button that has to be gripped and held rather than pushed.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it. Neither the PE frame nor the mat surface absorbs spills.
